Spring Drive 2022 – April 2

Spring Drive 2022 – April 2

Start planning now to attend the Spring Drive for Iowa BMW CCA. The event will be on April 2.

This is an East Meets West event, with drivers from the eastern part of the state starting at BMW of North Liberty, and drivers from the western part of the state starting at BMW of Des Moines.

Drivers will meet at 9:00 a.m. at the dealerships to receive instructions and to complete routine paperwork. We will begin our tour at 9:30 and arrive at our endpoint in Grinnell, IA by 1:00 p.m. with lunch at the West Side Family Restaurant.

For drivers on the west, BMW of Des Moines will provide a loaner car for one lucky driver to use for the day. We will raffle a name just prior to the start on April 2nd. Westsiders should also plan for a pit stop in Pella, IA for coffee and maybe some shopping at one of the renowned bakeries or sausage shops in town.

Drivers from the east can expect a pit stop in Oxford on their route to Grinnell for lunch.

Sign up is now open on  Motorsportreg.com – https://www.motorsportreg.com/events/east-meets-west-tour-side-family-restaurant-bmw-cca-iowa-792720

Please pre-register as soon as possible so we can have an accurate headcount.

Holiday Lights Drive ’n Dine – Saturday, December 4, 4:30 PM

Holiday Lights Drive ’n Dine – Saturday, December 4, 4:30 PM

update:

Reminder – The Iowa Chapter BMW CCA is having its Holiday Lights drive this Saturday, December 4th, meeting at BMW of Des Moines between 4:30 and 4:45pm.

Following the approximate 1 hour drive, we’ll all meet at Steamboat Boys in Clive for some BBQ.  What…you say, that’s the night of the Big Ten Championship Football game between Iowa and Michigan at 7pm?

No worries…Steamboat Boys has a large television in our separate dining room so what could be better than telling stories about getting lost driving in the dark, eating some BBQ and enjoying the friendship of fellow club members before the holidays (and perhaps staying a bit longer to watch the Hawkeyes?)

Please let either  Fred Bell (fourbells1@mchsi.com) or Rick Talbot (rickminir59@gmail.com) know if you’re planning to attend so we can have appropriate route maps ready for you…and to alert the restaurant of our massive group size!

Hope to see you all this Saturday!

=================== Original posting

We’ll meet between 4:30 & 4:45 pm at BMW of Des Moines, sign the requisite waiver forms

and then have a short meeting to distribute a guide sheet of some of the most notable holiday light decorations in several neighborhoods. Participants will be free to travel independently or as a group. You might find your favorite car or phone-based map program helpful to guide you on your own adventures.

Our holiday lights event this year will benefit the Adopt A Family program.  Event attendees are encouraged to participate through BMW of Des Moines, who has been paired up with a local family as the beneficiary.  Due to the family’s financial situation, the gifts the family will receive this year from the program may well be the only gifts that family will have.  Here’s how it works:

  1. CHOOSE a “GIFT TAG” from the BMW HOLIDAY TREE in the SERVICE Department
  2. Look at the back of TAG to see the gift that is needed.
  3. Please GIFT WRAP whatever you purchase.
  4. TAPE the TAG ONTO THE GIFT, so the family can identify who the gift is for.
  5. Bring the gift to the dealership and place into the ADOPT A FAMILY box.

Contributors may either stop by BMW of Des Moines ahead of the event to choose a Gift Tag and bring the gift to the Holiday Lights Drive, or pick up a tag when we’re at the dealership for the event and bring the gift in later.  Deadline for all gifts to be delivered to the dealership is Thursday Dec. 16.

After an appropriate time allowed for “seeing the sights”, we will gather at

Steamboat Boys BBQ (https://www.steamboatboys.com ), 1301 NW 114th St, Clive for a bit of pre-holiday dining and chatter. Steamboat Boys has a room reserved for us, so we’ll be able to have our whole group together (not an easy thing to do on a Saturday night during the holiday season!).

Those who intend to come please let Fred or Rick know by e-mail so we can get an idea whom to expect.  E-mail to fourbells1@mchsi.com or rickminir59@gmail.com.

The students will become more observant of the traffic situation they find themselves in. They will learn to look far enough ahead to anticipate unwise actions of other drivers. As the students master the application of physics to drive their cars, they will make fewer unwise driving actions themselves. They will understand why they should always wear their own seatbelts, and why they should insist that their passengers wear seatbelts, too.

It’s about more than driving – it’s about LIVING!

Three parents, including Scott Goodyear, former Indy Car Champion, share their perspectives in this video.

Parents are encouraged to stay!  Please arrive early.

Vehicles with modifications that alter the center of gravity (i.e. lift kits) are not acceptable.

High Center of Gravity Vehicles (HCGs) such as SUVs, SAVs, Trucks, Jeep-type vehicles, and Minivans will need to be verified.  The older HCGs without electronic stability control (not just the electronic traction control) will not be accepted.

HCG vehicles may still be limited with respect to the exercises in which they are allowed to participate based on local venue conditions.

Please look up the HCG vehicle safety score. You can research the safety ratings that a vehicle has received at www.edmunds.com  Input the vehicle and year and look at the safety rating in the upper right corner of the web page.

Any vehicle with a listing of 3 stars or more out of 5 in the Roll Over test will be allowed to participate in our class. We are concerned about the Roll Over test on the HCG only. We are not concerned about the crash test ratings.

Any HCG vehicle listed as “not tested” in the Roll Over test will not be allowed to participate.

ALL COMMUNICATION REGARDING THE SCHOOL WILL BE SENT TO THE E-MAIL ADDRESS ON THE REGISTRATION LISTED AS THE STUDENT’S.

Fall Colors Tour to Dubuque, IA – October 16-17

Fall Colors Tour to Dubuque, IA – October 16-17

Planning is underway for this year’s Fall Colors Tour, under the guidance of Warren Byerly.  We’ll start mid-morning on Saturday, October 16 at the Meskwaki Casino parking lot near Tama, taking a tour route through northeast Iowa and then overnighting in Dubuque. The Saturday lunch stop has not been nailed down yet, but watch for something with local color, so to speak! Saturday night’s dinner has been reserved at Timmerman’s in East Dubuque. A Sunday morning drive will bring us back down the Mississippi River before participants break off for their home areas.

Some of the details are still being finalized, but we encourage all potential participants to get Dubuque lodgings lined up now if you think you might want to participate. Fall Colors season is always busy, but this year will book up especially early with the return of visitors who were not able to travel last year. We will not have a single hotel with a room block; instead here are a few ideas for possible stays that we’ve used in the past. Some of these properties are already partially booked up, so don’t delay!

The Hancock House, 1105 Grove Terrace https://thehancockhouse.com/ (563) 235-0000

And of course, the usual chain hotels are present…
